OPINION

Michael Chopra should be feeling quite embarrassed by his comments about the Newcastle United squad last month.

In an interview with talkSPORT, the former Newcastle striker claimed that he had spoken with a number of senior players in the Magpies squad, who told him that “some of the players don’t know their jobs” due to Steve Bruce’s poor training methods.

Chopra made the claims after Newcastle suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to newly-promoted Norwich, but since then their form has turned around with a win against Tottenham and a draw against struggling Watford.

According to a recent report by The Athletic, Newcastle’s senior players are bewildered by Chopra’s comments.

It is understood that they have privately told Bruce that they are not leaking information about the squad to Chopra and are “sceptical” about whether the former striker’s comments hold any truth.

Chopra is someone who has found his voice quite a bit since Bruce replaced Rafa Benitez in charge at St James’ Park.

It was a change of leadership that led to a lot of anger from the club’s supporters and Chopra became quite a loud presence on social media throughout the summer, criticising Mike Ashley for his ownership.

It seems as though Chopra may have gone a bit too far with his campaign against Bruce’s management though, especially with what appear to be completely unfounded comments about the way the squad is being led by the Magpies boss.

Chopra needs to learn when it’s right to criticise and when he needs to keep quiet.
