Fabian Schar has told a Swiss newspaper he is “very happy” at Newcastle United, where he has “support” from the club and fans after a string of impressive performances.

Speaking to Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Schar spoke about his future, his time at Newcastle and also how he is studying for a degree in business.

Schar has become a mainstay in the Newcastle and Switzerland sides over the past 12 months, emerging as a leader on the field and one of the first names on the United teamsheet.

His performances have seen him linked with Arsenal and Spurs this year but he is one of the players whose contracts United are looking at to see whether an extension might work.

“I’m been studying business for a couple of years.

I am a different person when I’m on the field, much less reserved and I try to lead the team from my position in defence.” It shows in his commitment on the pitch, which has endeared him to Newcastle fans.

At 28, he would be at the upper end of their limit for a new deal but he’s seen as a key player in the squad.
