Steve Bruce knew from the get-go that he faced an incredibly tough task to replace Rafa Benitez - but just four months into the job he finds himself leading Newcastle United into December with a respectable points tally.

United are four points better off than this time last year and a point better off than in the 2017/18 season.

"Only results help you in that respect."



Bruce has had to use all of his experience to weather a storm or two since being appointed, but with 16 points in the bag so far from 14 matches, he is actually performing better than Benitez in both of the last two campaigns.

Getting past 20 points is the next big hurdle for Bruce, his back-room team and his squad, something that took until mid-January last term.

Asked about the fans, Bruce added: "Do you know the supporters have been nothing but terrific.
